Don't Worry about your Pet (or, Animal Neglect)

You don't need to micromanage your pet wolf (I don't even bother feeding him). He can identify a few cursed items early on, but he has the intelligence of an ant and doesn't help in a serious fight. You'll just frustrate yourself trying to keep him alive, because he will inevitably die to something silly, like jumping down a ladder into a firestone. KABOOM.

Don't Worry about Armor (or, Lack thereof)

You begin the game with a +0 hide outfit that provides 1 AC. In other words, you don't have any armor (save for shields, if you decide to use them). If you lose your outfit to fire attacks or Scroll of Destroy Armor, don't worry about it. You'll find armor later in the game.

Acquire Fire and Cold Resistance by Eating the Hearts of your Enemies

Eating red mold goo or hellhound meat has a chance of giving you permanent fire resistance - you'll see the message, 'you feel a momentary chill'. Eating brown mold goo or winter wolf meat has a chance of giving you permanent cold resistance - you'll see the message 'you feel full of hot air'. Take every opportunity to obtain these resistances. Game guardian.

Down to 100 Ft: goblin, jackal, kobold, lichen, sewer rat

At this earliest of stages, nothing threatens you - you can sleepwalk through here, kill everything, eat fresh meat, and pick up everything. Goblin, jackal, and sewer rat meat are great to eat. Kobold meat is poison, but they often carry a useful piece of fruit. Prioritize eating meat over fruits - fruits don't spoil, and they can cure status ailments (apples cure sickness, carrots cure blindness). These monsters give very little experience.

Down to 300 Ft: acid blob, bat, brown mold, cave spider, floating eye, garter snake, gas spore, giant rat, green mold, kobold lord, kobold shaman, kobold zombie, large kobold, rabid rat, red mold, yellow mold

Nothing threatening here. In contrast to other kobold meat, large kobold meat is safe to eat (probably an oversight on the developer's part). These monsters give significantly more experience with each kill, soyou will quickly gain several levels.

When you find nests (for lack of a better term) of large kobold or kobold shaman, use them as an excellent opportunity to level up quickly. Rest when necessary.

Down to 600 Ft: bugbear, dwarf, dwarf lord, fog cloud, giant bat, giant redback, hill orc, mummy, ogre, orc warrior, rothe, zombie

Bugbears, hill orcs, and rothes are easy. Bugbears occasionally carry a large helmet that you can wear. Rothes have great meat. Orc warriors are a bit tougher.

Giant redbacks are dangerous in groups, this early in the game. I recommend avoiding the giant redback nests unless you have reliable escape tactics. You can't outrun them.

Dwarves are powerful in numbers. Dwarf lords can be extremely dangerous, depending on the equipment they are using - I don’t recommend trying to engage them on equal footing, if you can avoid it. Use ladder tricks.
